Orthopaedic Surgery

Plymouth Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Clinic

Many orthopaedic problems can be managed without surgery, and at POSIC we believe that in most cases non-operative treatments should be tried at least initially.

This may involve advice re life style choices, type of exercise, footwear, the provision of orthotics (insoles) etc. Simple pain relief can make orthopaedic pain perfectly tolerable.

At POSIC we have close working relationships with Physiotherapists throughout the region, and in our experience they may have an invaluable role in helping patients overcome orthopaedic problems.

However, some patients may not respond to non-operative treatment, and it is then appropriate to consider surgical options.

At POSIC, we all have subspecialist interests. This means that you can be confident that your surgeon will be up to date with the latest developments and evidence in their area of expertise. This allows you to fully understand your options, the range of surgical procedures available and the risks associated with surgery. It is also important that you understand the recovery and rehabilitation following surgery and the expected outcome.

We recognise that even minor surgery can be a stressful experience for our patients, and bigger surgery is a major life event. At POSIC we aim to do everything we can to make your surgery as stress free and as safe as possible. We work closely with our Anaesthetic colleagues to minimise post-operative pain. We aim to get you home as soon as it is safe to do so, and in many cases surgery is performed on a day case basis. We pride ourselves on having low rates of complications such as infection and Deep Vein Thrombosis, by assessing you as an individual and taking the most appropriate precautions.

We routinely see you for follow up in outpatients within a few weeks of your surgery. And finally, if you do have a post-operative problem a member of the POSIC team is always available to provide advice and assistance.
